The Roles of NGOs in Humanitarian Interventions and the Peace Support Operation in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

This article analyzes the participation of NGOs in humanitarian intervention and peace operations, and is based on the assumption that they are developing a wide range of practices which are part of the global approach to confl ict management. In order to examine in detail such practices, this article focuses on a specifi c case study: The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia will be analyzed because it offers some interesting points of observation, both for the peculiarity of the United Nations Preventive Deployment Force (UNPREDEP) mission (deployed by the UN as a preventive tool) and for the parallel activities organized by several NGOs, international and local ones, before and after confl ict in the country. The article includes data derived from a survey conducted in November 2009 to gather the opinions of the representatives of nineteen humanitarian NGOs and four networks of NGOs active in the fi elds of (providing humanitarian assistance, peacebuilding, and conflict transformation and mediation.
