This paper analyses the role of a detailed contextual historical understanding upon current plans for rural health organisation in China. Considering the New Rural Cooperative Medical System (NRCMS) in China, launched in 2002, we seek to trace the differences and similarities of this model from its earlier form inaugurated at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution in 1965. It is, we believe only from this historical starting point that a greater understanding of the current challenges facing the NRCMS can be contextualised.
