The aim of this contribution is to stress the importance of the use of remote sensing satellites within the framework of regional and international cooperation to improve responses to natural and human-made disasters. Starting from a comprehensive review of the international legislation underlying the satellite remote sensing activities, which has promoted the use of these technologies in emergency scenarios, the article will proceed, analyzing a practical case, with a technical explanation of how these satellites have actually been used to assist operators engaged in the disaster response to the emergency in question.
