The Internet is experiencing a threefold paradigm shift, specifically: i) an increasing number of applications offers social features, reflecting in an Internet of People, ii) users are even more mobile and iii) power consumption is becoming critical. In this vein, guaranteeing the proper degrees of privacy and security is mandatory for the successful deployment of many modern Internet applications. However, security mechanisms can clash with requirements imposed by energy-oriented constraints. As consequence, many security solutions must be re-engineered, also to take into account new constraints imposed by this new social environment. In this perspective, the Chapter analyzes requirements and features of social applications, in order to understand and optimize the energy consumption of the most critical security mechanisms. Besides, the Chapter also discusses possible enhancements in the application design to reduce security issues and the needed countermeasures.
