Italy was an important if often overlooked practitioner of imperial warfare in Africa. The Italian invasion of Ottoman Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, which led to the creation of the Italian Libya colony, can be seen as the first step towards that escalation of violence that would lead to the First World War, Yet the Libyan war was not just a prequel to the Balkan Wars and the Great War but was part of a longer and wider conflict. This chapter explains how fighting in Libya expanded during the First World War, influencing not only the strategy of Italy, but also that of Great Britain and Turkey, and how it continued even after the armistice in 1918.
